Montezuma is an amazing little town on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.
Yesterday morning, I left Mal Pais to come over here and am so glad because
this place is by far my favorite so far. Everything is centered around one
small area next to a beautiful cove. There are these amazing restaurants and
bars overlooking the ocean, cute gift shops everywhere, internet cafes, one
church, a small bookstore and that pretty much sums it up. Apparently, this
is a European hotspot. I’m just happy because there are just enough people
here to keep you from going stir crazy. I’m staying with the girls from San
Francisco that I met on the ferry ride over here in this great guesthouse
right on the beach. It has air conditioning, so we are all in heaven right
now.
Yesterday we took the most amazing trek to an 80 foot waterfall just outside
the heart of the city. The waterfall emptied out into this long river of
smaller waterfalls and to get to it, we had to wade through the river, climb
over rocks, maneuver our way through the jungle, etc. Just as we were
approaching the waterfall, we heard thunder. My experience in Costa Rica so
far is that it is sunny or overcast during the day and then it typically
will rain and thunder at night around 8pm or so (we’ve seen some pretty
amazing thunderstorms so far). We often hear thunder, but it’s not always
followed by rain. And even a local said that it wouldn’t rain. However, next
thing you know we are caught in the middle of a torrential downpour.
Somehow, it really didn’t matter because the waterfall was so amazing and
the trek there had been so tough that it made the whole experience
worthwhile.
Today is going to be a pretty laid back day. I’m getting my laundry done,
trying to figure out how in the hell I’m going to get up to Belize (flights
are extremely expensive) and will probably hit the beach for a while.
Tomorrow its off to Monteverde to do some canopy tours, zip lines, etc. It
will be a very long trip up there, but everyone tells me it’s pretty
amazing, so I’m sure it will be worth it
